In Talk of the Town, Teamer turns the gallery into a hall of fame homage to WNBA superheroes and the legacy of her grandmother’s basketball team, the Dillard Bleu Devils, which she founded and coached for 30 years at the historically black college Dillard University, New Orleans.
In her intricate, multi layered photo-based collages and paintings, Teamer celebrates the history of black female athletes in an attempt to interject their legacies into our contemporary collective consciousness. The show shares its name with, and is inspired by, a 1999 series of holographic basketball cards depicting top WNBA players of the era towering over their respective cities. These cards capture each player soaring through the air, limbs outstretched, focused in movement, and gazing towards the basket. In her homage hall of fame, Teamer emphasizes the heroic legacy of these players, creating multifaceted abstract paintings that literally stretch the frame in an attempt to destroy the confines of their status as secondary to the NBA and recognize their greatness in an empowered present.
